Kenya - UN appeals for aid amid 'catastrophic' Horn of Africa drought
Kenya - REPORT - Gripped by the worst drought for sixty years, people across the Horn of Africa face starvation. The United Nations estimates that twelve million people are at risk of starving to death, mainly in Somalia, but also in Ethiopia and Kenya, as the international community struggles to plug a funding shortfall. UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon has stated that 1.6 billion dollars of donations are required over the next 12 months, to tackle the crisis. Our reporters Duncan Woodside and Stephanie Braquehais visited Moyale District, in northern Kenya, close to the Ethiopian border. In the village of Funanqumbi, it has barely rained for two years. They found a once-proud cattle-herding community that is now entirely dependent on international aid.
