Famine Spreads in Somalia

More displaced Somalis from the Bay area moved into the semi-autonomous region of Puntland in droves on Tuesday, as the nation continues to suffer from drought and famine. This region is the sixth in Somalia to be impacted by starvation since the United Nation's first announced the outbreak of famine in July which has affected a little over half the population. On Monday, the UN said that the six out of eight regions south of the country are now affected by the famine, as 750, 000 Somalis are at risk of starvation. Amina Mohammed is an example of a person who has been displaced within Somalia. "I came from Bay in Southern Somalia last month because of the drought, I settled at Galkayo but the recent clashes scared me and I had to move from there. I got here yesterday but the situation looks the same from where I came from, I don't know what to do," she said. Moreover, aid agencies are facing difficulty supplying the people with food, as the al-Qaeda affiliated al-Shabab rebels are prohibiting incoming aid to the southern territory which they predominantly control. Also, displaced farmers don't have enough time to reach their farms to tend their crops by October, when brief rainfall is expected. "The situation at Bay was very bad, there is a lot of starvation there and there is no water. The last time it rained there was years ago and all our livestock was wiped out. We are farmers and all our crops died, I don't think enough attention is being given to this situation," she said. The displaced have been complaining about the lack of basic human necessities like food and shelter. Thirty percent are suffering from severe malnourishment and the UN reports two in 10,000 deaths a day. Since the end of dictator Mohammed Siad Barre's rule 20 years ago, Somalia has been hit by continuous conflict and civil war. The country has been ruled by interim governments since 2004, but a meeting was held by various stakeholders on Tuesday in the capital Mogadishu to discuss both security and political reform and the holding of elections next year. Horn of Africa Famine: Millions at Risk in "Deadly Cocktail" of War, Climate Change, Neoliberalism

Original Website : democracynow.org http://www.democracynow.org/2011/7/22/horn_of_africa_famine_millions_at Democracynow is on youtube http://www.youtube.com/user/DemocracyNow Friday, July 22, 2011 : Al-Shabab Says Foreign Aid Ban Continues in Somalia The militant Islamist group al-Shabab has announced its ban on foreign aid groups remains in place in Somali areas under its control. Al-Shabab reversed the longstanding ban earlier this month as the crisis in Somalia escalated into what the United Nations has now declared to be a famine threatening millions of people. The ban had grounded efforts to reach residents of drought-stricken areas across southern Somalia. Al-Shabab has also dismissed U.N. claims of a famine in Somalia as "100 percent false." Touring southern Somalia on Thursday, World Food Programme executive director Josette Sheeran appealed for more aid. Josette Sheeran: "They need fortified supplemental foods in massive quantities throughout the areas where they have been unable to be reached. So, mostly in southern Somalia we're seeing a weakened population, and we have to focus on this. We have called on all global supply lines to supply these fortified foods. We need the contributions and the supply chain to not end." http://www.democracynow.org/2011/7/22/headlines#1 Horn of Africa Famine: Millions at Risk in "Deadly Cocktail" of War, Climate Change, Neoliberalism The United Nations has called an emergency meeting to discuss the Horn of Africa drought, which it says has already claimed tens of thousands of lives. Famine was declared in two regions of Somalia on Wednesday where 3.7 million people are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. Another eight million people need food assistance in neighboring countries including Kenya and Ethiopia. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon calls the situation a "catastrophic combination of conflict, high food prices and drought" and has appealed for immediate aid. We go to Nairobi for an update from Kiki Gbeho of the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. We also speak with Christian Parenti, author of "Tropic of Chaos: Climate Change and the New Geography of Violence." "This was predicted long ago by people on the ground," Parenti says. "It's a combination of war, climate change and very bad policy, particularly an embrace of radical free market policies by regional governments that mean the withdrawal of support for pastoralists, the type of people you saw with their dead cattle. http://www.democracynow.org/2011/7/22/horn_of_africa_famine_millions_at Video source file : http://ewheel.democracynow.org/dn2011-0722.mp4.torrent End music : Music Box Opening (by Lzn02) http://www.jamendo.com/en/track/338677 The original content of DemocracyNow is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 United States License. http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/us/ http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/us/legalcode

Weather conditions over the Pacific have interrupted seasonal rains for two consecutive seasons. Rains are not expected to return until September 2011. This drought, which is said to be 'the worst in 60 years', has caused a food crisis in the Horn of Africa that threatens the livelihood of more than 10 million people. The crisis is compounded by rebel activity around southern Somalia. The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS-Net) declared an emergency for large areas in southern Somalia, southeastern Ethiopia, and northeastern Kenya, which could culminate in widespread famine if the current conditions aren't addressed. Other countries in and around the Horn of Africa, including Djibouti, Sudan, South Sudan, and parts of Uganda are also affected by a severe food crisis. - Like/Dislike, Comment, Favorite and share on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ to get the word out on this video. Libya - Who's Right and Who's Wrong, 1 of 3

July 25, 2011, NATO bombs a food warehouse in Zlitan, Libya. The purpose of American, European and Arab sanctions or siege is to starve a people, a nation into submission. This is a contradiction of the psyops now being promoted by the UN in Somalia, calling it one of the worst famines ever. With Somalia, it is complete with the mass media suddenly and simultaneously blasting pictures of emaciated Somali children at you, as the US Joint Special Operations Command is bombing in Somalia, killing whoever it deems to be a terrorist. War triggers famines and peace brings prosperity. We saw this in Angola when Jonas Savimbi was being used like so-called dissidents of liberty and democracy are being used today. Years ago, corporate media used such pictures of skin and bones children in other areas of Africa promoting it as starvation when the truth was that the people had been struck by the wasting attributes of HIV/AIDS, a biological warfare weapon manufactured in 1969-70 by the US Army under Public Law 91-171 and entitled "Synthetic Biological Agent". This is one reason the US Senate, the most powerful branch of the US government where Senators serve for six years before coming back up for re-election, refused for 40 years to ratify the UN Genocide Treaty. When the Libyan government indicated the food supply had become a target of NATO bombing, Western media and NATO, in concert, denied it and stated it only strike military targets. ..............

[Channel 4 News] Somalia: A step away from famine 2008.05.16

By John Sparks: An upsurge in fighting in war-ravaged Somalia has triggered a food shortage affecting 2.6 million people. It has already been called the worst humanitarian crisis in Africa. And now the United Nations says the situation in Somalia is about to get much worse, with vast swathes of the country just a step away from famine. Somalia has been without a proper government since 1992. But an upsurge in fighting has helped to trigger a catastrophic food shortage affecting 2.6 million people. Last week Channel 4 News sent a cameraman to a clinic for malnourished children on the edge of Mogadishu. (C) Channel 4 News

U.N. Says U.S. Preventing Aid to Millions of Hungry Somalis

U.N. officials are saying that U.S. restrictions designed to stop terrorists in Somalia from diverting aid are hurting humanitarian operations in the country. Top UN humanitarian official Mark Bowden says UN agencies have not seen any evidence from the US government that food aid is being diverted to Islamic fundamentalists fighting the U.N.-backed Somali government. Bowden told journalists in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi: "What we are seeing is a politicization of humanitarian issues. The options for a lot of Somalis look pretty bleak."

Somalia renewed fighting

Somali diplomats were also reportedly among at least 10 people killed in the blast at a hotel in Beledweyne. Somalia's president blamed al-Shabab - accused of links to al-Qaeda - which later claimed the attack. Al-Shabab is among militants who have been trying to topple the fragile UN-backed government for three years. On Wednesday, at least 10 people died when a mortar hit a Mogadishu mosque. The city's police chief was killed in a separate attack. 'Invaded by terrorists' In Thursday's blast, witnesses said a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle at the Medina Hotel in Beledweyne, some 400km (249 miles) north of Mogadishu. Mogadishu carnage devastates lives Most of the victims were burnt beyond recognition after the explosion, a local medic was quoted as saying by the Associated Press news agency. Abdulkarim Ibrahim Lakanyo, a former Somali ambassador to Ethiopia, was reportedly among those killed in the blast. Mr Aden had recently moved to Beledweyne, a town close to the Ethiopian border, in an effort to stop Islamist insurgents gaining more ground in Somalia, the BBC's Will Ross in Nairobi says. Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed told a news conference in Mogadishu: "As you see this country was invaded by terrorists who do not allow for the existence of the Somali national flag, its sovereignty and any peace to this country. "This group is hiding under the cloth of Islam. You know that a lot of foreigners are pouring into the country day by day," he added, in an apparent reference to Islamist fighters from overseas he has previously warned are entering Somalia to join the insurgents. Somali Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme the transitional federal government was still in control but urged the international community to help "before it is too late". The failed Horn of Africa state has not had an effective national government since 1991 and some four million people - one-third of the population - need food aid, aid agencies say. Pro-government forces have been locked in ferocious battles with radical Islamist guerrillas in Mogadishu since the second week of May. The UN refugee agency's representative to Somalia, Guillermo Bettocchi, said on Wednesday the recent bout of bloodletting in the country was the "worst ever" in nearly two decades of chaos. But Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, the UN special representative for Somalia, denied on Thursday that the conflict was getting worse. "The president and prime minister have been put in place in January and February. It is not even six months, so you will not have total peace after two decades of violence overnight," he told Focus on Africa. "These people [Islamist guerrillas] tried around 7 May to take power by force; they have not been able to do it. That they have resorted to suicide bombs or killing, there is nothing any country can do against these kind of people, but this is different from taking power." President Ahmed, a moderate Islamist, took office in January but even his introduction of Sharia law to the strongly Muslim country has not appeased the guerrillas

"SOMALIA" HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY

Where do you find Paradise? The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, Paradise is at the feet of the mother. This is variously interpreted to mean that the mother is responsible for teaching her children their religious obligations and good behavior that will win them Paradise; or it may mean that we earn Paradise by serving our mother throughout her life. Either way, it shows the great esteem, honor and respect that Islam has for mothers. While the fourth Commandment in the Bible is Honor thy father and thy mother, the Bible does not mention the mother separately as deserving good treatment. The Quran, in contrast, gives special recognition to the mothers suffering in bearing and nursing her child: And We have enjoined on man to be good to his parents: In travail upon travail did his mother bear him and in two years was his weaning. Show gratitude to Me and to your parents (31:14). (see themodernreligion.com under women) Women are more psychologically fitted to nurturing, more compassionate and patient Today in the Muslim world, even where many of the precepts of Islam are ignored, Westerners are often amazed at the gentle, loving treatment that parents receive. An Arab proverb says if you want to know how a man will treat his wife, look how he treats his mother. Becoming a mother is one of the greatest joys of a Muslim woman. She knows that her child is both a gift and a trust from God. She carries a great responsibility in raising a family, not only in caring for their physical needs, but also in educating them in their religion and morals. For this and other reasons, Islam calls upon all Muslims, male and female, to be educated, for how can a woman teach her children when she herself is ignorant? Islam also recognizes that, compared to the man, the woman is by nature more psychologically fitted to nurturing, more compassionate and patient. For that reason, Islam decrees that husbands must maintain their wives and children, and it encourages mothers with young children to remain at home with their children rather than work outside the house. And, in case of divorce, custody of young children goes to the mother. All this respect and honor goes to the mother, even if she is a non-Muslim, and also to maternal aunts. Thus the woman does not cut from her own family when she marries, but her children continue to honor the kin relationships of both their mother and father.

ChildSoldiers/The worst humanitarian disaster

Child Soldiers The worst humanitarian disaster in the world today," were the words used to describe Somalia. While the tragedy in Somalia made daily news, the plight of thousands of refugees in neighboring countries remains unpublicized. Since 1992,Over 500,000 Somalis have fled across the border in neighboring countries, most of them women and children. Many were the victims of violence, including rape, as they fled war-torn Somalia. They came to Kenya to escape these dangers only to face similar abuse while enroute to or living in the refugee camps. The carnage inflicted upon the civilian population by indiscriminate use of weapons of extraordinary force and by the failure on all sides to abide by minimum standards of international humanitarian law (the laws of war) has already earned Mogadishu a special place in the annals of human cruelty.
