Horn of Africa Famine: Millions at Risk in "Deadly Cocktail" of War, Climate Change, Neoliberalism

Original Website : democracynow.org http://www.democracynow.org/2011/7/22/horn_of_africa_famine_millions_at Democracynow is on youtube http://www.youtube.com/user/DemocracyNow Friday, July 22, 2011 : Al-Shabab Says Foreign Aid Ban Continues in Somalia The militant Islamist group al-Shabab has announced its ban on foreign aid groups remains in place in Somali areas under its control. Al-Shabab reversed the longstanding ban earlier this month as the crisis in Somalia escalated into what the United Nations has now declared to be a famine threatening millions of people. The ban had grounded efforts to reach residents of drought-stricken areas across southern Somalia. Al-Shabab has also dismissed U.N. claims of a famine in Somalia as "100 percent false." Touring southern Somalia on Thursday, World Food Programme executive director Josette Sheeran appealed for more aid. Josette Sheeran: "They need fortified supplemental foods in massive quantities throughout the areas where they have been unable to be reached. So, mostly in southern Somalia we're seeing a weakened population, and we have to focus on this. We have called on all global supply lines to supply these fortified foods. We need the contributions and the supply chain to not end." http://www.democracynow.org/2011/7/22/headlines#1 Horn of Africa Famine: Millions at Risk in "Deadly Cocktail" of War, Climate Change, Neoliberalism The United Nations has called an emergency meeting to discuss the Horn of Africa drought, which it says has already claimed tens of thousands of lives. Famine was declared in two regions of Somalia on Wednesday where 3.7 million people are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. Another eight million people need food assistance in neighboring countries including Kenya and Ethiopia. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon calls the situation a "catastrophic combination of conflict, high food prices and drought" and has appealed for immediate aid. We go to Nairobi for an update from Kiki Gbeho of the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. We also speak with Christian Parenti, author of "Tropic of Chaos: Climate Change and the New Geography of Violence." "This was predicted long ago by people on the ground," Parenti says. "It's a combination of war, climate change and very bad policy, particularly an embrace of radical free market policies by regional governments that mean the withdrawal of support for pastoralists, the type of people you saw with their dead cattle. http://www.democracynow.org/2011/7/22/horn_of_africa_famine_millions_at Video source file : http://ewheel.democracynow.org/dn2011-0722.mp4.torrent End music : Music Box Opening (by Lzn02) http://www.jamendo.com/en/track/338677 The original content of DemocracyNow is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 United States License. http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/us/ http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/us/legalcode

U.N. Says U.S. Preventing Aid to Millions of Hungry Somalis

U.N. officials are saying that U.S. restrictions designed to stop terrorists in Somalia from diverting aid are hurting humanitarian operations in the country. Top UN humanitarian official Mark Bowden says UN agencies have not seen any evidence from the US government that food aid is being diverted to Islamic fundamentalists fighting the U.N.-backed Somali government. Bowden told journalists in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi: "What we are seeing is a politicization of humanitarian issues. The options for a lot of Somalis look pretty bleak."

Somalian Alberta Turf War Shows No End

He came to Alberta looking to pay for university, instead allegedly finding drugs and bad friends. Now, his slain body will lay in Alberta forever, his name marked on a long list of dead young Somali-Canadian men. Abdinasir Abdulkadir Dirie wont make it to first-year university this fall, the kind of prosperous future his father sought for his family when he immigrated. I thought Canada is a peace country. (It offered) a future for my life, my children. This is a very bad thing.said Abdulkadir Tarambi, the 19-year-olds father. Abdulkadir Dirie was a native of Toronto. He was set to study computer science at York University in the fall, and saw prosperous Alberta as a way to pay for it, said Tarambi. (Young people) heard in Alberta you can get an easy job, get a lot of money, said Tarambi. In August 2008, he moved to Edmonton, staying with his older brother in Edmonton and working at Tim Hortons. Then he headed to Fort McMurray with an oil and gas job. By January, he was in trouble. According to the RCMP, Abdulkadir Dirie was arrested alongside four other young men, including a minor, in a Fort McMurray apartment Jan. 22. All were charged with possession of cocaine for trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime under $5,000. Abdulkadir Dirie was released on $500 bail, while his alleged associates paid thousands to be released. The last time his family heard from Abdulkadir Dirie was April 20, said family friend Mohamed Mohamed. Abdulkadir Dirie told his mother, as he often repeated, that he was coming home. Hed even bought a ticket, said Mohamed. Abdulkadir Diries body was found April 21 in an apartment on McDonald Avenue.

Somalians caught up in Alberta Turf Wars

Yet again, the victims were born in Somalia but raised in Toronto. Yet again, the victims appear to have had links to a bustling drug trade between Ontario and Alberta. Yet again, police have no suspects. On Feb. 17, Idiris Abess, 23, and Saed Adad, 22, were found dead in Hillside Manor, a downtown Fort McMurray apartment building notorious for drug-dealing and prostitution, according to current and former residents.

Somalians caught up in Alberta Turf Wars, K'naan speaks

Somali-Canadians from Ontario are being gunned down at an alarming rate in Alberta. Police blame the drug trade. Many of the deaths have been public execution-style slayings, family members say. "It seems like they want to send out a message, like, do not come near us," Mahmoud said. Alberta police agree, saying some of the killings have been "a message to Toronto," the CBC's John Lancaster reported.

Who really killed Abdinasir Dirie? A heart-rending story from inside Canada's Somali community. In the 1990s, Abdinasir Dirie's parents fled civil war in Somalia for the apparent peace and safety of Canada. Years later, G Baby, as his family called him, made his own way from the rough streets of Toronto's Jamestown Cres. The extra twist in this case: some members of his family are convinced they know who committed the crime. Hear from the family of Abdinasir Dirie as the fifth estate explores the searing pain of their struggle and peels back the layers of a story even more complicated than anyone originally expected.
