Muslim Aid - Somalia Drought, Field Report. 19 July 2011

Muslim Aid Head of International Programmes reports from a temporary IDP camp in Mogadishu, Somalia on the desperate situation for thousands of people in the drought affected region. To help, please donate to Muslim Aid now. Call +44(0) 20 7377 4200 or visit www.muslimaid.org Muslim Aid has launched an urgent emergency appeal to provide humanitarian relief to people affected by the severe drought and malnutrition occurring in the countries of eastern Horn of Africa. An estimated 10 million people in Djibouti, Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Sudan are at risk of starvation. A shortage of food, water and medicines, made worse by persistent drought conditions in the region have forced thousands of people to flee their homes and seek refuge in camps in Mogadishu, as well as on the border of Northern Kenya and Ethiopia. Launching the appeal, a Muslim Aid spokesperson said: "The onslaught of drought in eastern Horn of Africa is not an overnight disaster event. It has been building up for months. Food and water reserves in these countries have depleted to the extent that governments are unable to meet the needs of their populations. Livestock are dying and food supplies have collapsed. Hundreds of villages have been totally abandoned. The time has come for the international community to take notice of this alarming situation and act fast to help the affected people before it is too late." "Muslim Aid Field Offices in Somalia and Kenya are providing relief to the refugees. Muslim Aid appeals to its donors and partner institutions to urgently come to the aid of the victims of drought and save precious lives."

"SOMALIA" HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY

Where do you find Paradise? The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, Paradise is at the feet of the mother. This is variously interpreted to mean that the mother is responsible for teaching her children their religious obligations and good behavior that will win them Paradise; or it may mean that we earn Paradise by serving our mother throughout her life. Either way, it shows the great esteem, honor and respect that Islam has for mothers. While the fourth Commandment in the Bible is Honor thy father and thy mother, the Bible does not mention the mother separately as deserving good treatment. The Quran, in contrast, gives special recognition to the mothers suffering in bearing and nursing her child: And We have enjoined on man to be good to his parents: In travail upon travail did his mother bear him and in two years was his weaning. Show gratitude to Me and to your parents (31:14). (see themodernreligion.com under women) Women are more psychologically fitted to nurturing, more compassionate and patient Today in the Muslim world, even where many of the precepts of Islam are ignored, Westerners are often amazed at the gentle, loving treatment that parents receive. An Arab proverb says if you want to know how a man will treat his wife, look how he treats his mother. Becoming a mother is one of the greatest joys of a Muslim woman. She knows that her child is both a gift and a trust from God. She carries a great responsibility in raising a family, not only in caring for their physical needs, but also in educating them in their religion and morals. For this and other reasons, Islam calls upon all Muslims, male and female, to be educated, for how can a woman teach her children when she herself is ignorant? Islam also recognizes that, compared to the man, the woman is by nature more psychologically fitted to nurturing, more compassionate and patient. For that reason, Islam decrees that husbands must maintain their wives and children, and it encourages mothers with young children to remain at home with their children rather than work outside the house. And, in case of divorce, custody of young children goes to the mother. All this respect and honor goes to the mother, even if she is a non-Muslim, and also to maternal aunts. Thus the woman does not cut from her own family when she marries, but her children continue to honor the kin relationships of both their mother and father.

Motive for Al Shabaab Arrests? President Obama Suggests Working with Somalia Day Before

He is lying. Never let a good terror scare go to waste ...... The government charged 14 people Thursday with supporting "a deadly pipeline" routing money and fighters from the U.S. to the terrorist group al-Shabab in Somalia. The cases in Minnesota, California and Alabama reflect "a very disturbing trend" of increasing support for terrorism, Attorney General Eric Holder told a news conference. He credited leaders in Muslim communities in the U.S. for helping law enforcement agencies address the problem. The nation "must prevent this kind of captivation from taking hold," the attorney general said. Most of the people charged are U.S. citizens. Some supported the terrorist organization from the United States and others traveled to Somalia to join up with al-Shabab. Al-Shabab is a Somali insurgent faction embracing a radical form of Islam similar to the harsh, conservative brand practiced by Afghanistan's Taliban regime. Its fighters, numbering several thousand strong, are battling Somalia's weakened government and have been branded a terrorist group with ties to al-Qaida by the U.S. and other Western countries. One of two indictments issued in Minnesota alleges that two Somali women and others went door-to-door in Minneapolis, Rochester, Minn. and elsewhere in the U.S. and Canada to raise funds for al-Shabab's operations in Somalia. The indictment says the women raised the money under false pretenses, claiming it would go to the poor and needy, and used phony names for recipients to conceal that the money was going to al-Shabab. The indictment alleges that the women, Amina Farah Ali and Hawo Mohamed Hassan, also raised money by making direct appeals to people in teleconferences "in which they and other speakers encouraged financial contributions to support violent jihad in Somalia." During one teleconference, the indictment says, Ali told others "to forget about the other charities" and focus on "the Jihad." The indictment says Ali and others sent the funds to al-Shabab through various hawalas, money transfer businesses that are a common source of financial transactions in the Islamic world. Ali is accused of sending $8,608 to al-Shabab on 12 different occasions between Sept. 17 2008 through July 5, 2009. After the FBI searched Ali's home in 2009, she allegedly contacted an al-Shabab leader in southern Somalia and said: "I was questioned by the enemy here. ... they took all my stuff and are investigating it ... do not accept calls from anyone." Also on Thursday, a newly released State Department annual report on worldwide terrorism noted with concern that al-Qaida, particularly in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia, appeared to be attracting growing numbers of radicalized Americans to its cause. Roughly 20 men from the U.S. - all but one of Somali descent - left Minnesota from December 2007 through October 2009 to join al-Shabab, officials have said. Somali-Americans have been recruited and have taken part in suicide bombings in Somalia, and U.S. officials fear trained Somali-American terror plotters could return to the United States. Al-Shabab last month claimed twin bombings in Uganda that killed 76 during the World Cup final, the group's first international attack. Uganda and Burundi both have peacekeeping forces in Mogadishu, and al-Shabab has vowed to continue attacks against the two countries. Al-Shabab members began pledging allegiance to al-Qaida last year. One of its most famous members is known as Abu Mansour al-Amriki, or "the American." He appeared in a jihadist video in May 2009. Omar Jamal, the first secretary at the Permanent Mission of the Somali Republic to the United Nations, said Thursday he was happy to hear of the indictments. "We welcome this as a positive step toward the beginning of the defeat of al-Shabab," said Jamal, a longtime advocate for the Somali community in Minneapolis.

Forum About the racism in StCloud Area

Forum focuses on posting of cartoons in St. Cloud By Mark Sommerhauser • msommerhauser@stcloudtimes.com • January 27, 2 Del.icio.us Facebook Digg Reddit Newsvine Buzz up! Twitter FarkIt Type Size A A A There are two places in St. Cloud that Amer Lam feels safe: her home and her classroom. Anywhere else is a different story, Lam told city leaders and a crowd of hundreds at City Hall on Tuesday night. Lam was speaking about last month's posting of anti-Muslim cartoons in St. Cloud, at a forum hosted by the Council on American-Islamic Relations—Minnesota Chapter. Many speakers questioned local authorities' response to the incident, and asked why the man who has admitted to posting the cartoons doesn't face criminal charges. Others criticized city leaders for not doing enough to combat long-standing discrimination against Muslims and people of color. Lam told city leaders she's been to plenty of "kumbaya meetings" about discrimination. This time, Lam wanted to know what will happen next. "I've been here for four years, and I'm scared of this city," Lam said. "What are you going to do to show that you are going to protect all citizens of St. Cloud?" City leaders responded with little beyond what was announced Friday, when city attorneys cited a Waite Park man who's admitted to posting the cartoons. Sidney Allen Elyea is charged with two counts of violating an ordinance against posting materials on fixtures — civil charges that carry maximum fines of $250 each. That wasn't enough for many at Tuesday's forum, who suggested the man could be charged with disorderly conduct or other, more serious offenses. City Attorney Jan Petersen told the crowd that his office considered pressing criminal charges against Elyea but decided it wouldn't hold up in court. City leaders also urged residents to report instances of discrimination or harassment. St. Cloud Police Chief Dennis Ballantine said that entails a "two-way street" of cooperation between city leaders and community members. "You've got to work with us," Ballantine said. "You can't sit back and wait for us to find all the solutions." For Lam — who moved here from Rochester to attend St. Cloud State University — the cartoon incident sparked her own ugly memories of facing discrimination in St. Cloud. Lam was born in Sudan and is Christian, but says she's been heckled in public for being a Muslim. The issue is especially meaningful to Lam because she says her family fled Sudan to escape religious persecution. Others told similar stories, like Fathiya Mohamed. She said many Somalis graduate from local universities but flee St. Cloud, believing there are no opportunities for them here. Mohamed, a Somali who lives in St. Cloud, said Tuesday's forum was a start toward reversing that problem. "It was a great learning opportunity for everyone," Mohamed said.

www.volkertvandergraaf.com Tribute to Westergaard & Wilders

This is a tribute to Kurt Westergaard & Geert Wilders www.volkertvandergraaf.com Geert Wilders also published the cartoons at his website http://www.pvv.nl/ A Somali man believed to have ties to terrorist groups was shot as he allegedly tried to enter the home of Danish political cartoonist Kurt Westergaard -- known for his controversial depictions of the Muslim prophet Mohammed -- on Friday, police said. The 27-year-old man, who was not identified, wielded an ax and a knife and cracked a window at Westergaard's home in Aarhus, said police spokesman Morten Jensen. A home alarm alerted police to the scene at 10 p.m., and they were attacked by the man, he said. The officers shot the man in the right leg and left hand. He was hospitalized, but was not seriously injured, police said. Danish intelligence officials said the suspect is connected to al-Shabaab, al Qaeda's ally in east Africa. The incident "once again confirms the terrorist threat that is directed against Denmark and against cartoonist Kurt Westergaard, in particular," said Jakob Scharf, spokesman for the Danish Security and Intelligence Service, in a statement. Westergaard's caricature of Mohammed -- which depicted the prophet wearing a bomb as a turban with a lit fuse -- sparked an uproar among Muslims in early 2006 after newspapers reprinted the images months later as a matter of free speech. The cartoon was first published by the Danish newspaper Morgenavisen Jyllands-Posten in September 2005. At the time, Westergaard said he wanted his cartoon to say that some people exploited the prophet to legitimize terror. However, many in the Muslim world interpreted the drawing as depicting their prophet as a terrorist. Over the years, Danish authorities have arrested other suspects who allegedly plotted against Westergaard's life. After three such arrests were made in February 2008, Westergaard issued a statement, saying, "Of course I fear for my life after the Danish Security and Intelligence Service informed me of the concrete plans of certain people to kill me. However, I have turned fear into anger and indignation. It has made me angry that a perfectly normal everyday activity which I used to do by the thousand was abused to set off such madness." Scharf said authorities have taken measures to ensure Westergaard's safety, and that the protection has "proven effective."
