Turkey's Aid to Somalia

On August 13, Turkey's Islamic charity foundation IHH organized aid for victims of famine and drought in Somalia. Preparations were under way to send three tons of food to Somalia. IHH officials loaded food supplies into the ship as organization chairman Bulent Yildirim will be sending another ship in the coming days. Bulent Yildirim said, "We will dispatch another ship loaded with four tonnes of humanitarian aid this week. During the campaign we are aiming to send aid worth 50 billion Turkish Liras (28 billion USD) to Somalia." 3.7 million Somalis are suffering from severe famine after drought affected some 11.6 million people across Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia. The Turkish government has already dispatched two cargo planes loaded with 50 tons of food and medical supplies earlier this week and the Turkish Red Crescent is working with the government's development agency and Office of Religious Affairs to raise donations from the public. Turkish officials were carrying out preparations for a meeting of the 57-nation Organization of the Islamic Conference on August 17, 2011 in Istanbul. The drought, the worst in decades, has affected about 12 million people across the Horn of Africa. Famine conditions were expected to persist until the end of the year as drought, conflict and a lack of food aid have left 3.6 million people at risk of starvation in southern Somalia. Speaker: Bulent Yildirim, Turkey's Islamic charity foundationIHH chairman. Voice: Najib Bencherif By: Ikram Al Yacoub Al Arabiya With Agencies

Clinton: Somalia to Receive Millions for Famine Relief

Clinton: Somalia to Receive Millions for Famine Relief At the International Food Policy research Institute, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that the U.S. will increase aid for famine relief to the Horn of Africa, with 12 million U.S. dollars reserved for Somalia, the worst affected by the crisis. "The United States is the largest single country contributor of food and humanitarian assistance to the Horn of Africa. On Monday, President Obama announced that in light of the current crisis, we are making available an additional 105 million dollars in emergency funding. Today I'm announcing another 17 million on top of that, with 12 million designed specifically for helping the people of Somalia. That brings the total U.S. humanitarian assistance to the region to more than 580 million dollars this year. We are reaching more than 4.6 million people with this aid." Ms. Clinton said. Ms. Clinton re-issued her demand for Al Shabaab militants to give aid workers free entry into Somalia. "Still, a great deal depends on whether al Shabaab is willing to let international assistance be delivered. And so I once again urge al Shabaab to heed the calls not only of the international community, including the Arab league, but of the cries of their own people, and allow the secure delivery of relief to all those who are afflicted. The United States will continue to work with Somalis and the international community to bring the hope of peace and stability to Somalia. And we join all Somalis in hoping that there will be a future with a functioning government that can protect the Somali people against famine and help to build a sustainable agricultural sector." She added. Clinton called on governments and donors to contribute with immediate aid for the 12 million people affected by the worst drought and famine in decades in countries such as Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti and Somalia. Thousands of deaths caused by starvation in Somalia

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the U.N., or "FAO", asked for an additional 120 million dollars in aid for Northeastern Africa, 70 million to be sent to Somalia and 50 million to Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti and Uganada. The U.N. agency of refugees states that close to 40% of Somalia's children who reach Dadaab suffer from malnutrition. During the first four months of this year, more children died here than in the entire previous year. http://multimedia.telesurtv.net/en/20/7/2011/42662/thousands-of-deaths-caused-by-starvation-in-somalia/

Weather conditions over the Pacific have interrupted seasonal rains for two consecutive seasons. Rains are not expected to return until September 2011. This drought, which is said to be 'the worst in 60 years', has caused a food crisis in the Horn of Africa that threatens the livelihood of more than 10 million people. The crisis is compounded by rebel activity around southern Somalia. The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS-Net) declared an emergency for large areas in southern Somalia, southeastern Ethiopia, and northeastern Kenya, which could culminate in widespread famine if the current conditions aren't addressed. Other countries in and around the Horn of Africa, including Djibouti, Sudan, South Sudan, and parts of Uganda are also affected by a severe food crisis. - Like/Dislike, Comment, Favorite and share on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ to get the word out on this video. Kenya - UN appeals for aid amid 'catastrophic' Horn of Africa drought

Kenya - REPORT - Gripped by the worst drought for sixty years, people across the Horn of Africa face starvation. The United Nations estimates that twelve million people are at risk of starving to death, mainly in Somalia, but also in Ethiopia and Kenya, as the international community struggles to plug a funding shortfall. UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon has stated that 1.6 billion dollars of donations are required over the next 12 months, to tackle the crisis. Our reporters Duncan Woodside and Stephanie Braquehais visited Moyale District, in northern Kenya, close to the Ethiopian border. In the village of Funanqumbi, it has barely rained for two years. They found a once-proud cattle-herding community that is now entirely dependent on international aid. FRANCE 24 INTERNATIONAL NEWS 24/7 http://www.france24.com

Somalia famine: Islamists keep aid workers out

International efforts to fight the famine in Somalia are in trouble now that Islamist groups in the country continue to deny access to aid workers. Only the Norwegian Refugee Council, the Red Cross and Islamic Relief are not banned from working inside Somalia. It means the European Union has the rely on these organisations to provide aid inside Somalia, and on camps like this one in Doolow, near the borders with Kenya and Ethiopia in areas that that are not controlled by Al Shabab. Kristalina Georgieva, EU Commisisoner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response: "We can get aid into the famine zones and we also can make it possible for many more places in Somalia to be provided with food, water, medical support. So IDPs do not have to cross all the way into Ethiopia or in Kenya, creating a bigger refugee problem for the future." Somalia's Al-Shabab islamist movement has said that the famine that has been declared by the United Nations was a 'politically motivated lie'. Al-Shabab has banned 16 aid organisations and also the World Food Programme from delivering aid in Somalia because it accuses them of spreading Christian thinking. Since 2008, a total of 36 international aid workers have been killed while working in Somalia. [Channel 4 News] Somalia: A step away from famine 2008.05.16

By John Sparks: An upsurge in fighting in war-ravaged Somalia has triggered a food shortage affecting 2.6 million people. It has already been called the worst humanitarian crisis in Africa. And now the United Nations says the situation in Somalia is about to get much worse, with vast swathes of the country just a step away from famine. Somalia has been without a proper government since 1992. But an upsurge in fighting has helped to trigger a catastrophic food shortage affecting 2.6 million people. Last week Channel 4 News sent a cameraman to a clinic for malnourished children on the edge of Mogadishu. (C) Channel 4 News

Rising food prices in Kenya

This short film features people in Kenya who have seen the price of staples such as maize, beans and oil soar in the last two years. Many families are now getting by on only one meal a day. In the film, one woman says that she often misses her meals altogether so she can feed her children. Concern is responding to this crisis. In the Kerio Valley, we have successfully piloted a programme that uses mobile phone technology to give cash to the most vulnerable families so they can buy food. Marsabit and Kalacha we are working with partner agency Community Initiatives Facilitation and Assistance (Cifa) to help people manage the effects of drought.
