Somalia to Get More Peacekeeping Troops
The United Nations Security Council voted unanimously to send additional peacekeeping troops to Somalia during their annual meeting at its headquarters in New York on Friday. Security Council resolution 2010 raised the number of troops for the African Union Mission in Somalia from about 9,300 to 12,000. It also extended its mandate in Somalia until next year. The council has also called on Somalia's transitional government to carry out a roadmap leading to elections within a year. The new troops will likely come from Burundi, Djibouti, Sierra Leone and Uganda. Somalia's Ambassador to the United Nations, Elmi Ahmed Duale, said peacekeepers were urgently needed across his country. Elmi Ahmed Duale said, "Mr. President, as most of the members of the Security Council are aware of, the Somali security forces are overextended at present and they are contained only in Mogadishu and that it is of utmost urgency to enlarge and improve the capabilities of the Somali armed forces and police. Furthermore, as also stated by His Excellency, the Secretary-General, in order to consolidate and build on the recent security gains, it is essential to also enlarge the AMISOM forces. There has been positive reference to this in this resolution." In addition to security issues, Somalia is currently in the throes of a devastating drought and famine. The head of United Nations Higher Commission for Refugees, Antonio Guterres visited the Somali capital, Mogadishu, during Eid on Wednesday, to assess the current status of famine in the country. Guterres expressed his annual solidarity to a community during an important time that relates to their religious beliefs. This year, he picked Somalia and scheduled a visit that coincided with the end of the holy month of Ramadan - Eid. While this is a celebratory occasion for Muslims, Somalis have been suffering from the severe drought and starvation. "The international communities need to get together. All actors -- UN, Red Cross, Red Crescent, NGOS, Islamic organizations, need to work in a combined way, in a coordinated way, to be able to address the needs of these people that are suffering so much," said Guterres. According to Guterres, there are currently 850,000 refugees outside Somalia, and 1.4 million displaced inside Somalia, which he says is more difficult to support. "The Eid is a good moment to make this appeal, after Ramadan, to all parties to the conflict, to respect the humanitarian law, and to let humanitarian aid reach the totality of the territory of Somalia," he said. Relief aid agencies are finding it difficult to reach certain areas with millions of people who require aid. Many areas are under the control of Al Shabaab rebels, an al Qaeda-affiliated group. More displaced Somalis from the Bay area moved into the semi-autonomous region of Puntland in droves on Tuesday, as the nation continues to suffer from drought and famine. This region is the sixth in Somalia to be impacted by starvation since the United Nation's first announced the outbreak of famine in July which has affected a little over half the population. On Monday, the UN said that the six out of eight regions south of the country are now affected by the famine, as 750, 000 Somalis are at risk of starvation. Amina Mohammed is an example of a person who has been displaced within Somalia. "I came from Bay in Southern Somalia last month because of the drought, I settled at Galkayo but the recent clashes scared me and I had to move from there. I got here yesterday but the situation looks the same from where I came from, I don't know what to do," she said. Moreover, aid agencies are facing difficulty supplying the people with food, as the al-Qaeda affiliated al-Shabab rebels are prohibiting incoming aid to the southern territory which they predominantly control. Also, displaced farmers don't have enough time to reach their farms to tend their crops by October, when brief rainfall is expected. "The situation at Bay was very bad, there is a lot of starvation there and there is no water. The last time it rained there was years ago and all our livestock was wiped out. We are farmers and all our crops died, I don't think enough attention is being given to this situation," she said. The displaced have been complaining about the lack of basic human necessities like food and shelter. Thirty percent are suffering from severe malnourishment and the UN reports two in 10,000 deaths a day. Since the end of dictator Mohammed Siad Barre's rule 20 years ago, Somalia has been hit by continuous conflict and civil war. The country has been ruled by interim governments since 2004, but a meeting was held by various stakeholders on Tuesday in the capital Mogadishu to discuss both security and political reform and the holding of elections next year. FAO South Somalia mission Aug 11 2011.mov
On August 2011, a delegation from FAO traveled to Dhobley in southern Somalia, in one of the first high level UN visits to the small border town in three years. Dhobley, located in Afmadow district in Southern Somalia is among areas severely affected by the current drought. FAO's Chief of Emergency Operations Cristina Amaral and FAO Officer in Charge for Somalia, Luca Alinovi, were shocked at how the Dhobley population, about 6,000 people, was taking a devastating toll of drought. Drought was killed thousands of livestock, disrupting Dhobley's major economic activity. The fact-finding mission was followed by immediate plans to intervene into Dhobley to ease the suffering in the Somali border town. Filmed and produced by Frank Nyakairu, FAO Somalia.

Clinton: Somalia to Receive Millions for Famine Relief
Clinton: Somalia to Receive Millions for Famine Relief At the International Food Policy research Institute, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that the U.S. will increase aid for famine relief to the Horn of Africa, with 12 million U.S. dollars reserved for Somalia, the worst affected by the crisis. "The United States is the largest single country contributor of food and humanitarian assistance to the Horn of Africa. On Monday, President Obama announced that in light of the current crisis, we are making available an additional 105 million dollars in emergency funding. Today I'm announcing another 17 million on top of that, with 12 million designed specifically for helping the people of Somalia. That brings the total U.S. humanitarian assistance to the region to more than 580 million dollars this year. We are reaching more than 4.6 million people with this aid." Ms. Clinton said. Ms. Clinton re-issued her demand for Al Shabaab militants to give aid workers free entry into Somalia. "Still, a great deal depends on whether al Shabaab is willing to let international assistance be delivered. And so I once again urge al Shabaab to heed the calls not only of the international community, including the Arab league, but of the cries of their own people, and allow the secure delivery of relief to all those who are afflicted. The United States will continue to work with Somalis and the international community to bring the hope of peace and stability to Somalia. And we join all Somalis in hoping that there will be a future with a functioning government that can protect the Somali people against famine and help to build a sustainable agricultural sector." She added. Clinton called on governments and donors to contribute with immediate aid for the 12 million people affected by the worst drought and famine in decades in countries such as Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti and Somalia. UN to airlift food to African famine zone
The United Nations has agreed to airlift food to help some of the 12 million people affected by drought in the Horn of Africa. Aid agencies say one in three Somalis is now at risk from famine. The move follows Monday's emergency meeting with aid agencies and charities in Rome. The UN says it's so far received $1bn, but needs the international community to donate a billion more by the end of the year to stave off widespread starvation. The World Bank has promised 500-million-dollars for the region. However, $12m will be immediately released for relief projects for those worst hit by the drought. Al Jazeera's Jamal ElShayyal reports on the crisis.

Thousands of deaths caused by starvation in Somalia
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the U.N., or "FAO", asked for an additional 120 million dollars in aid for Northeastern Africa, 70 million to be sent to Somalia and 50 million to Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti and Uganada. The U.N. agency of refugees states that close to 40% of Somalia's children who reach Dadaab suffer from malnutrition. During the first four months of this year, more children died here than in the entire previous year. http://multimedia.telesurtv.net/en/20/7/2011/42662/thousands-of-deaths-caused-by-starvation-in-somalia/

Somalis flee drought and civil war
Tens of thousands of Somalis fled their country in June, marking another rise in the flood of refugees streaming into neighbouring Ethiopia and Kenya. Many come to Dadaab, the largest refugee camp in the world, where around 1,400 people are arriving each week. Dadaab was built to house 90,000 people; it's now home to more than 350,000. Many children suffering from malnourishment are reported to have died on the long trek to the camp or within a day of arriving. Behind the crisis lies a devastating mix of civil war, rising food prices and one of the worst droughts to hit the Horn of Africa in modern history. The hardline Muslim Shabab militia, which is fighting the weak Transitional Federal Government in Somalia, has banned aid organizations from operating on the rich farmland it occupies, forcing residents to flee to the capital, Mogadishu. Al Jazeera's Nazanine Moshiri reports from Nairobi.

Weather conditions over the Pacific have interrupted seasonal rains for two consecutive seasons. Rains are not expected to return until September 2011. This drought, which is said to be 'the worst in 60 years', has caused a food crisis in the Horn of Africa that threatens the livelihood of more than 10 million people. The crisis is compounded by rebel activity around southern Somalia. The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS-Net) declared an emergency for large areas in southern Somalia, southeastern Ethiopia, and northeastern Kenya, which could culminate in widespread famine if the current conditions aren't addressed. Other countries in and around the Horn of Africa, including Djibouti, Sudan, South Sudan, and parts of Uganda are also affected by a severe food crisis. - Like/Dislike, Comment, Favorite and share on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ to get the word out on this video. USAID Administrator Addresses Famine, Drought in Horn of Africa
Learn more at at: http://www.usaid.gov/hornofafrica On July 20, 2011, USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah held a press briefing in Kenya following his visit to Daadab refugee camp and Wajir. Across the eastern Horn of Africa, more than 11 million people—a number greater than the populations of Houston and New York City combined—are now in need of emergency assistance to survive. As a result of the region's worst drought in 60 years, crops have failed, livestock have died, and prices in local markets are too high for most people to buy what is needed to feed their families. Millions of people are affected in Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya, and especially in Somalia. On July 20, 2011 the United Nations announced that famine exists in two regions of Somalia. As the situation has grown more dire, over 600,000 Somalis have fled to neighboring countries, , some walking hundreds of miles to refugee camps in search of food and water. Nearly half of the children arriving at the camps are acutely malnourished; all are in need of emergency assistance and support for the extremely difficult weeks and months ahead. The United States is one of the largest donors of emergency assistance to the region, helping more than 4.6 million of those in need and providing over $459 million this year alone, including an additional $28 million announced by Secretary Clinton following the declaration of famine.

Kenya - UN appeals for aid amid 'catastrophic' Horn of Africa drought
Kenya - REPORT - Gripped by the worst drought for sixty years, people across the Horn of Africa face starvation. The United Nations estimates that twelve million people are at risk of starving to death, mainly in Somalia, but also in Ethiopia and Kenya, as the international community struggles to plug a funding shortfall. UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon has stated that 1.6 billion dollars of donations are required over the next 12 months, to tackle the crisis. Our reporters Duncan Woodside and Stephanie Braquehais visited Moyale District, in northern Kenya, close to the Ethiopian border. In the village of Funanqumbi, it has barely rained for two years. They found a once-proud cattle-herding community that is now entirely dependent on international aid. FRANCE 24 INTERNATIONAL NEWS 24/7 http://www.france24.com

Muslim Aid - Somalia Drought, Field Report. 19 July 2011
Muslim Aid Head of International Programmes reports from a temporary IDP camp in Mogadishu, Somalia on the desperate situation for thousands of people in the drought affected region. To help, please donate to Muslim Aid now. Call +44(0) 20 7377 4200 or visit www.muslimaid.org Muslim Aid has launched an urgent emergency appeal to provide humanitarian relief to people affected by the severe drought and malnutrition occurring in the countries of eastern Horn of Africa. An estimated 10 million people in Djibouti, Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Sudan are at risk of starvation. A shortage of food, water and medicines, made worse by persistent drought conditions in the region have forced thousands of people to flee their homes and seek refuge in camps in Mogadishu, as well as on the border of Northern Kenya and Ethiopia. Launching the appeal, a Muslim Aid spokesperson said: "The onslaught of drought in eastern Horn of Africa is not an overnight disaster event. It has been building up for months. Food and water reserves in these countries have depleted to the extent that governments are unable to meet the needs of their populations. Livestock are dying and food supplies have collapsed. Hundreds of villages have been totally abandoned. The time has come for the international community to take notice of this alarming situation and act fast to help the affected people before it is too late." "Muslim Aid Field Offices in Somalia and Kenya are providing relief to the refugees. Muslim Aid appeals to its donors and partner institutions to urgently come to the aid of the victims of drought and save precious lives."

Somalis flee to Kenya in search for food
Somali refugees have become the victims of the worst drought to hit the Horn of Africa in nearly sixty years. Faced with starvation and caught in conflict, thousands of Somalis are fleeing their country and heading for Kenya. They have traveled through harsh conditions with little food or water, and no humanitarian assistance. Many head across the border to northern Kenya into Dadaab refugee camp expecting help. But drought has hit almost every country in the Horn of Africa. Somalis have been fleeing from war for years now, but this is a different kind of exodus. The refugees are forced to leave their land because they risk dying of starvation at home. Nazanine Moshiri reports from Dobley, Somalia.

Somali armed group lifts aid ban amid drought
The Somali group, al-Shabab, says it has lifted a ban on aid agencies operating in the parts of the country it controls. Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage, an al-Shabab spokesperson said, "We have now decided to welcome all Muslim and non-Muslim aid agencies to assist the drought-stricken Somalis in our areas..." In some areas, one out of every three children is malnourished, in one of the region's worst droughts in 60 years. The UN says close to three million people in Somalia need emergency aid. Al-Shabab, which is said to be connected to al-Qaida networks in Africa and the Gulf, controls the majority of Somalia, including almost half of the capital, Mogadishu. In the past, they have said food aid creates dependency, but they have also used aid for themselves and charged foreign organisations high fees to operate. Al Jazeera's Mariana Sanchez reports.

Somalis flee drought-afflicted town
Somali Islamist group Al-Shabab lost control of Dobley near the Kenyan border to forces loyal to government in Mogadishu. They are all gone now. But the fight to take control of the town killed hundreds of people and destroyed much of its infrastructure. Residents, dealing with one of the worst droughts to ever hit the region, have no choice but to leave the town and cross the border into neighbouring Kenya. Al Jazeera's Nazanine Moshiri has this exclusive report.

Food shortage looms over Somalia
Somalia's drought is worsening and the tense security situation is hindering aid operations in the country. But al Shabab fighters, with links to Al-Qaeda, have reportedly been trying to bolster support by offering help to those in need as an alternative to western aid which they claim is a propaganda tool. While lack of food for the next few months is expected to be a major problem, after two decades of war Somalis are no stranger to adversity. Jamal Osman reports from Wanlaweyn, eastern Somalia.

For more than 3 years combined 10 million people have been affected by severe drought in the horn of Africa, the worst it has ever faced in 60 years. 3 million of those affected are in Somalia and in need of desperate help as the situation has reached a stage where food is scarce and a quarter of the population has been displaced as thousands of families are having to flee daily from their homes towards neighbouring countries and refugee camps. The drought has affected all the countries located in the horn but southern and central Somalia are the most seriously hit with more than 70% of the population affected. More than 65% of the livestock have already died and crops have barely grown in the last three years. Malnutrition within the children and the elderly is the worst in the world with Global Acute malnutrition (GAM) over 40%. In the worst areas one in three children are suffering from malnutrition. To respond ADT has distributed emergency food to over 1500 households in Mogadishu and its suburbs. Construction of hand dug wells are also undergoing in lower Jubba. The situation is very very desperate and it cannot be described in words. We need your help to save lives of those dying out of hunger and thirst. Please donate generously.
