On August 13, Turkey's Islamic charity foundation IHH organized aid for victims of famine and drought in Somalia. Preparations were under way to send three tons of food to Somalia. IHH officials loaded food supplies into the ship as organization chairman Bulent Yildirim will be sending another ship in the coming days. Bulent Yildirim said, "We will dispatch another ship loaded with four tonnes of humanitarian aid this week. During the campaign we are aiming to send aid worth 50 billion Turkish Liras (28 billion USD) to Somalia." 3.7 million Somalis are suffering from severe famine after drought affected some 11.6 million people across Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia. The Turkish government has already dispatched two cargo planes loaded with 50 tons of food and medical supplies earlier this week and the Turkish Red Crescent is working with the government's development agency and Office of Religious Affairs to raise donations from the public. Turkish officials were carrying out preparations for a meeting of the 57-nation Organization of the Islamic Conference on August 17, 2011 in Istanbul. The drought, the worst in decades, has affected about 12 million people across the Horn of Africa. Famine conditions were expected to persist until the end of the year as drought, conflict and a lack of food aid have left 3.6 million people at risk of starvation in southern Somalia. An estimated 10 million people in Djibouti, Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Sudan are at risk of starvation. A shortage of food, water and medicines, made worse by persistent drought conditions in the region have forced thousands of people to flee their homes and seek refuge in camps in Mogadishu, as well as on the border of Northern Kenya and Ethiopia. Launching the appeal, a Muslim Aid spokesperson said: "The onslaught of drought in eastern Horn of Africa is not an overnight disaster event. It has been building up for months. Food and water reserves in these countries have depleted to the extent that governments are unable to meet the needs of their populations. Livestock are dying and food supplies have collapsed. Hundreds of villages have been totally abandoned. The time has come for the international community to take notice of this alarming situation and act fast to help the affected people before it is too late." U.N. Says U.S. Preventing Aid to Millions of Hungry Somalis
U.N. officials are saying that U.S. restrictions designed to stop terrorists in Somalia from diverting aid are hurting humanitarian operations in the country. Top UN humanitarian official Mark Bowden says UN agencies have not seen any evidence from the US government that food aid is being diverted to Islamic fundamentalists fighting the U.N.-backed Somali government. Who really killed Abdinasir Dirie? A heart-rending story from inside Canada's Somali community. In the 1990s, Abdinasir Dirie's parents fled civil war in Somalia for the apparent peace and safety of Canada. Years later, G Baby, as his family called him, made his own way from the rough streets of Toronto's Jamestown Cres. (Doomstown) neighbourhood to the oilfields of Alberta looking for riches and good fortune. There, he died and his murder remains unsolved, like so many other murders of young Somali-Canadians.
