Al-Shabaab's Famine - Somalia

4 million Somalis in danger of starvation To see more go to http://www.youtube.com/user/journeymanpictures Follow us on Facebook (http://goo.gl/YRw42) or Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/journeymanvod) In this report we bring you the first al-Shabaab interview with a Western news organisation since the UN declared famine in Somalia. They claim there is no crisis, but shocking images tell the real story. "Although we've saved many lives, 4,5 or 6 children die every day", says Doctor Abdalla Bulle. This is the result of a political deadlock, which has meant that aid is only trickling into an area hit by the worst drought in 60 years. Many aid agencies have pulled out of al-Shabaab areas and international donors are unwilling to rush in money, fearing it will end up in the hands of militants. Al-Shabaab deny they are hindering the aid effort: "we have only refused those who were doing more harm than good, and those with political agendas", a spokesman tells us. Indeed, on the ground aid workers seem more concerned with a lack of foreign aid than with AS interference. "There is no fear that aid agency funds are going to al-Shabaab. It's not humane that we can't access funds because of this fear", Hassan from Islamic Relief says. They, like other aid agencies here, maintain that they fully control the distribution of their aid. Some refugees say the group is controlling their movements, but there remains little evidence of corruption. To stop the disaster a full-scale rescue effort is needed, but while the argument over access goes on, the people's long wait continues. August 2011

Somalis flee war, drought [NBC 7-07-2011]

This channel is brought to you by MeTee T-Shirts: The place for On-Demand t-shirts. - Saturday July 16 2011 5:03 pm http://www.msnbc.msn.com/?id=11881780&q=Somalis+flee+war,+drought+&search=&p=1&st=1&sm=user The 2011 Horn of Africa drought or 2011 Eastern Africa drought is a severe drought that is affecting the Horn of Africa as seasonal rains have failed over an extended period. Weather conditions over the Pacific have interrupted seasonal rains for two consecutive seasons. Rains are not expected to return until September 2011. This drought, which is said to be 'the worst in 60 years', has caused a food crisis in the Horn of Africa that threatens the livelihood of more than 10 million people. The crisis is compounded by rebel activity around southern Somalia. The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS-Net) declared an emergency for large areas in southern Somalia, southeastern Ethiopia, and northeastern Kenya, which could culminate in widespread famine if the current conditions aren't addressed. Other countries in and around the Horn of Africa, including Djibouti, Sudan, South Sudan, and parts of Uganda are also affected by a severe food crisis. - Like/Dislike, Comment, Favorite and share on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ to get the word out on this video. Deadly Draught-News Analysis-07-11-2011

Millions in need of lifesaving action: the place, Somalia: With nearly half the population teetering at the edge of starvation, why aren't countries doing enough to eradicate this problem, a country the UN declared as the "worst humanitarian crisis in Africa". In this news analysis, we ask why funds are appropriated for wars, for example, and not for people dying of starvation.

Somalia famine: Islamists keep aid workers out

International efforts to fight the famine in Somalia are in trouble now that Islamist groups in the country continue to deny access to aid workers. Only the Norwegian Refugee Council, the Red Cross and Islamic Relief are not banned from working inside Somalia. It means the European Union has the rely on these organisations to provide aid inside Somalia, and on camps like this one in Doolow, near the borders with Kenya and Ethiopia in areas that that are not controlled by Al Shabab. Kristalina Georgieva, EU Commisisoner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response: "We can get aid into the famine zones and we also can make it possible for many more places in Somalia to be provided with food, water, medical support. So IDPs do not have to cross all the way into Ethiopia or in Kenya, creating a bigger refugee problem for the future." Somalia's Al-Shabab islamist movement has said that the famine that has been declared by the United Nations was a 'politically motivated lie'. Al-Shabab has banned 16 aid organisations and also the World Food Programme from delivering aid in Somalia because it accuses them of spreading Christian thinking. Since 2008, a total of 36 international aid workers have been killed while working in Somalia. Millions face famine in Somalia

The United Nations has declared a state of famine in some parts of southern Somalia where the worst drought in over half a century is already being blamed for thousands of deaths. An estimated 3.7 million people, or more than one-third of Somalia's population, is in need of emergency aid, the UN's food agency said on Wednesday. "Every day of delay in assistance is literally a matter of life or death for children and their families in the famine-affected areas," Mark Bowden, the UN humanitarian co-ordinator for Somalia, said. "It is likely that tens of thousands will already have died, the majority of those being children." The UN has appealed for $300m to help victims of the drought, and aid groups have criticised the slow response of many Western governments to fund the shortfall. Al Jazeera's Mohamad Adow reports from Nairobi, Kenya.

MaximsNewsNetwork: SOMALIA - REFUGEES FLEE VIOLENCE IN MOGADISHU (UNHCR)

MaximsNewsNetwork: 12 March 2020 - UNHCR: Somalia - The United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR, reports that thousands in Somalia have fled the latest violent clashes in Mogadishu which continue to claim civilian lives. So far this month 60 people, mostly civilians, have reportedly been killed and another 120 have been injured; UNHCR estimates over 100,000 Somalis have fled their homes this year alone. It is also estimated that 1.4 million Somalis are displaced inside the country and over a half million are refugees in neighbouring states, making it one of the largest refugee crises in the world. Many have found shelter in what has become a massive shanty town outside of Mogadishu on the road to Afgoye. SOUNDBITE (Somali) Halima Daaud, Displaced Person, Somalia: We have already moved away from our homes because of the daily violence, we already fled and now we are moving again. Here we have more problems - we dont know where to go. We are afraid to leave Mogadishu, we are afraid of the insects biting us and there are no good shelters to sleep in and the worst case scenario is looming. It may be safer there but the conditions are brutal. Despite the violence in Mogadishu many Somalis like Mako Hassan say they will try and survive in the city. SOUNDBITE (Somali) Mako Hassan, Displaced Person, Somalia: We previously moved from our home in Suqa Holaha. I have lived here for months. We endure the violence. Sometimes the fighting and mortar shells reach my home. We always hear the sound of gunfire, but we have survived so many times. Water, food and other essential items are very expensive and it is also dangerous just to try to obtain them. SOUNDBITE (Somali) Mako Hassan, Displaced Person, Somalia: My husband doesnt have a job, he cant help us. I sometimes work doing laundry for other families to earn some money so we can eat. We are in bad shape. We need help from the international community. ....................................... ................. ........................................ ...................
