Knaan Take a minute with lyrics
Knaan And any man who knows a thing knows, he knows not a damn, damn thing at all, And everytime I felt the hurt and I felt the givin' gettin' me up off the wall, I'm just gonna take a minute and let it ride, I'm just gonna take a minute and let it breeze, I'm just gonna take a minute and let it ride, I'm just gonna take a minute and let it breeze, How did Mandela get the will to surpass the everyday, When injustice had him caged and trapped in every way, How did Ghandi ever withstand the hunger strikes and all, Didn't do it to gain power or money if I recall, It's to give; I guess I'll pass it on, Mother thinks it'll lift the stress of babylon, Mother knows, my mother she suffered blows, I don't know how we survived such violent episodes, I was so worried, and hurt to see you bleed, But as soon as you came out the hospital you gave me sweets, Yeah, they try to take you from me, But you still only gave 'em some prayers and sympathy, Dear mama, you helped me write this, by showing me to give is priceless. {Chorus} All I can say is the worst is over now, We can serve the hard times, divorce is over now, They try to keep us out, but they doors is open now, My nigga Akon is gettin awards for covers now, This is K'NAAN, and still reppin' the IS (?) Comin' out of Mogadishu and still draped in the mess, And no matter how we strong, homie, It ain't easy comin out of where we from, homie. And that's the reason why, I could never play for me, Tell 'em the truth, is what my dead homies told me, Oh yeah, I take inspiration from the most heinous of situations, Creating medication out my own tripulations. Dear Africa, you helped me write this, by showing me to give is priceless. {Chorus} Nothing is perfect man, that's what the world is, All I know is, I'm enjoying today. You know, 'cause it isn't everybody that you get to give. {Chorus} Yeah, yeah, yeah x 8

Canadian Somali Congress interviewed on the Journey for Justice Event in Ottawa
CBC Radio interview on the Journey for Justice Event in Ottawa. The event was meant to encourage the Canadian Somali community in Ottawa to help the parents of the 32 young Canadian Somali men who have been killed in Alberta. The majority of these homicides remain unsolved. These parents need everyone to stand shoulder to shoulder with them as they embark on their quest for justice. The CBC's Hallie Cotnam spoke with Ahmed Hussen of the Canadian Somali Congress who helped organize the event and Muna Ibrahim whose brother Mohamed was killed in Alberta in 2008.

Canadian Somali Congress comments on the deportation of Somalis from Canada to Somalia
CBC news item examining the difficulties faced by the Canadian government as it attempts to deport dozens of individuals from Canada to Somalia. It is not certain that the Canadian government will be able to complete these deportations because it outsources the job to Kenyan agents who do not observe basic human rights standards and who have exposed these deportees to lethal danger in Somalia. The difficulty is that deportation to certain violent parts of Somalia is tantamount to a death sentence. Canadian courts have disallowed the release of these men into Canadian society but at the same time they cannot be easily deported to certain parts of Somalia due to anarchy and generalized violence. In addition to this, the two regional governments of Puntland and Somaliland have stopped accepting any more deportees from Canada.

Canadian Somali Congress comments on deportations of Somalis from Canada
On the day that Omar Ahmed, a young Somali man living in Ottawa, was deported to Somalia by Canadian authorities, the Canadian Somali Congress provided input to a CBC Radio program that examined the difficulties faced by the Canadian government as it attempts to deport individuals back to Somalia. It is not certain that the Canadian government will be able to complete the deportation process for Mr. Ahmed and others because they outsource the job to Kenyan agents who do not observe basic human rights standards and expose these men to lethal danger in Somalia. There are 11 young Somali men who are set to be deported to Somalia and who have lost their permanent residency in Canada due to serious and repeated criminality. The difficulty is that deportation to certain parts of Somalia is tantamount to a death sentence. The courts have already disallowed the release of these men into Canadian society but at the same time they cannot be easily deported to certain parts of Somalia due to anarchy and generalized violence. In addition to this, the two regional governments of Puntland and Somaliland have stopped accepting any more deportees from Canada. This means that the young men are in legal limbo and continue to remain in indefinite detention long after serving their initial sentences.

Canadian Somali Congress President participates in a panel discussion on Canadian Somalis part1.flv
Canadian Somali Congress President participates in a panel discussion on Alberta's failure to fully integrate Canadian Somalis The vast majority of Somalis in Canada are no longer immigrants but are Canadian citizens. Canadian Somali Congress National President Ahmed Hussen talks about Albertas failure to fully integrate young Canadian Somalis. Issues such as integration, self-help and fair treatment were discussed. Ahmed Hussen spoke about the fact that the vast majority of Somalis in Canada have either been born in this country or have lived here for decades and as such, cannot be accurately classified as immigrants or newcomers. Due to this fact, the Canadian Somali community does not need more immigrant settlement services. What is desperately needed is for policy makers to shift their perception of this community and see them as Canadian citizens with rights and responsibilities. This would allow for the provision of integration services such as access to jobs and professions that would enable Canadian Somalis to enjoy the fruits of the mainstream. This panel discussion was produced by the daily current affairs show Alberta Prime Time.

CBC Radio International program on the ongoing case of Canadian Somali Bashir Makhtal.avi
CBC Radio International's program on the ongoing case of Canadian Somali Bashir Makhtal. Canadian Somali Congress calls on the Canadian government to suspend the $100 million in non-humanitarian aid to Ethiopia until that government releases Mr. Makhtal. The Ethiopian government has engaged in the serious abuse of Mr. Makhtal's human rights including denying him medical attention, the right to a fair trial and the right to adequate legal representation. Mr. Makhtal is in failing health and is now serving a life sentence prison term after an unfair trial on what the Canadian government agrees are trumped up charges. The Canadian government has stated that they believe in his innocence. He stands accused of providing support to an opposition group in Ethiopia. However, given the profoundly unfair nature of the legal proceedings, the basis of those accusations have never been made clear and no credible evidence in support of the charges has ever been made public. Instead, much of the basis of the case has seemed to stem from the mere fact that Mr. Makhtal's grandfather was once an Ogadeni leader. Canadian Somali Congress has repeatedly called on the Ethiopian authorities to release Mr. Makhtal given that he received an unfair trial.

Canadian Somali Congress president on the successes and challenges of the Canadian Somali community
Canadian Somali Congress President interviewed by Nil Koksal of CBC News as part of a television series entitled "Canadian Dream." The series examines the successes and challenges that face different communities in Canada. This particular segment centered on the successes and challenges of the Canadian Somali community. The vast majority of Somalis in Canada are no longer immigrants but are Canadian citizens. Despite this fact, various levels of government and the mainstream community mistakenly continue to view Canadian Somalis as immigrants or recently-arrived refugees. This is evidenced by the fact that emphasis is placed on immigrant settlement services and language programs for a community that settled in this country decades ago. The real need of the community is integration into the Canadian mainstream. This can be achieved by a policy shift that emphasizes access to jobs and professions. Nowhere is this shift more needed than in Alberta where 30 young Canadian Somalis have been killed in the last 5 years. Despite the high number of deaths in Alberta, Ahmed Hussen noted that the vast majority of Canadian Somali youth are law abiding and productive citizens who are graduating from post-secondary institutions in record numbers.

CBC Interview regarding the socio-economic challenges facing the Canadian Somali community.avi
The trial of two men accused of killing Mohamed Ali Ibrahim, a Somali-Canadian man gunned down two years ago, has began in Edmonton, Alberta. This is the first trial in a string of murder cases involving young Canadian Somali victims. More than 30 young Canadian Somali men have died in Alberta in the last three years. There is concern in the community that this first trial is being undermined by intimidation, witness tampering, perjury and obstruction of justice. What are the factors that have contributed to the high number of deaths of young Canadian Somali men in Alberta? Are these deaths related to the fact that Somalis in Canada lag behind other groups in terms of socio-economic development? What can be done to integrate the community, especially its youth, into mainstream jobs and professions? What can be done to improve the lives of these young men in Canada to ensure that they do not fall victim to the lure of gangs? What is the Canadian Somali community doing to make sure that their youth have opportunities? These and other issues such as the Canadian Somali Jewish Mentorship Project were discussed in the CBC Radio program Metro Morning on November 4, 2010. The CBC's Matt Galloway interviewed Ahmed Hussen. He is the national president of the Canadian Somali Congress.

CBC interview regarding the Mohamed Ibrahim case
On the eve of the verdict in the trial of two men accused of killing Mohamed Ali Ibrahim, a Somali-Canadian man gunned down two years ago, CBC radio's Karen Horseman spoke to Ahmed Hussen, president of the Canadian Somali Congress, about the difficulties with witnesses faced during the trial and the fact that as the first trial in a string of murder cases involving young Canadian Somali victims, the family of the victim and the community were seeking justice to be done in this case. More than 30 young Canadian Somali men have died in Alberta in the last three years. Later in the day, judge Paul Belzil, found Adam Michael Brown and Alexander Reid guilty of second-degree murder in the slaying of Mohamed Ibrahim, 24, outside the River Cree Casino west of Edmonton. The guilty decision was met with audible relief from Ibrahim's mother, Fouzia Mohamed, and members of Edmonton's Somali community who surrounded her in the courtroom. In Canada, murder convictions carry an automatic life sentence.

K'NAAN Speaks on Bill C-393 - Sign the Petition to Save Lives!
K'NAAN speaks out on the importance of pushing Canadian members of Parliament and Senators to pass Bill C-393. If passed, this bill would help provide affordable, life-saving medications to millions of people in need who currently can't afford to save their lives. Bill C-393 would cut through the red tape currently surrounding Canada's Access to Medicines Regime, and would allow generic versions of name brand drugs to be manufactured. It's up for vote in the House of Commons on Wednesday, March 9. Please visit http://www.avaaz.org/en/medicine_for_all and sign the petition!
